Why We Chose the Public Charter Route for Homeschooling in California

When we first started thinking about homeschooling, I felt a mix of excitement and overwhelm. Living in California, I was surprised (and relieved!) to learn we actually have several options for how to homeschool—each with its own benefits. After lots of research and prayerful consideration, we chose to go the public charter school route.

Here’s why it works so well for our family:

Flexibility with a Safety Net
Our charter allows us the freedom to choose curriculum that fits our kids' learning styles and interests—whether that’s through hands-on science kits, ocean-themed sensory play, or math games on the trampoline! But what I really appreciate is that we still stay connected to the public school system. If our kids ever want to transition back to a traditional school setting, that door stays open.

🎨 Creative Freedom
Learning doesn’t just happen at a desk. Some days we “school” at the beach, the museum, or in the backyard building waterway systems and pretending we’re ocean explorers. The charter supports our non-traditional approach and even helps fund educational resources, classes, and field trips that align with our learning goals.

💛 Support Without Pressure
We’re assigned a credentialed teacher who helps us stay on track but also respects our rhythm and style. It’s the best of both worlds—structure without rigidity.

Homeschooling through a charter has truly allowed our family to create a joyful, engaging, and personalized learning journey. It may not be for everyone, but it’s been a beautiful fit for us.
