Building Passions, One Brick at a Time
One of my favorite parts about homeschooling is the freedom it gives my children to lean into their interests—whether it’s dance, gymnastics, swimming, or even building a LEGO set marked for adults only.
The beauty of home education is that we don’t have to treat learning as something separate from their passions. If my daughter wakes up inspired to try a new skill or chase a new curiosity, we have the flexibility to dedicate time to it. Sometimes these interests last for years, and other times they’re short-lived—but either way, they are meaningful. They add joy and confidence to her education, which matters more than checking off a worksheet.
Recently, my six-year-old decided to take on the Disney Pixar Luxo Jr. LEGO set, which is technically recommended for ages 18+. What could have been “just playtime” became a three-hour marathon of focus, patience, and creativity. Piece by piece, she brought the Pixar lamp to life—and even engineered a working light kit to make it shine.
Moments like this remind me why we homeschool. Education isn’t confined to a desk or a grade level; it’s about nurturing curiosity, problem-solving, and the courage to try something big. When she puts the same determination into dance routines, or when she dives into swimming lessons with excitement, I see the same spark: a love for learning in motion.
And that’s the gift of homeschooling—we don’t just make space for academics; we make space for passions. Because even if the interests change, the lessons of perseverance, creativity, and joy will last forever.
